The Turn

The main plot of this play is pretty brilliantly constructed. So often, when reading things like this, you tend to either see where it's going before your get there, or you're completely taken aback by how random and convoluted the plot gets, but here we have characters who are believable, with a logic that is inescapable. Beatrice is the spoiled little rich girl, who thought she could use De Flores' affection for her to kill kill Alonzo with no repercussions. Instead, De Flores saw a chance to force her into his arms without need of convincing her. There's a mad brilliance to it, and it's altogether a very human play.
I'm really glad to see the subplot back. It's completely unconnected to the main still, but I can't help but think about how I would play the mainplot actors up as inmates in the asylum. You could have them running through the background as the subplot goes on, with transitions between the two overlapping each other. De Flores, etc. would simply be madmen enacting a small drama as part of their psychosis, which I think would be vastly entertaining and present an interesting take on how the play turns out.
