Okay, so do we really even need the first scene? It seems to me like they don't even need to show Alonzo in order to tell us that he is trying to go after Beatrice. Beyond introducing him, all 2.1 does is reaffirm the fact that Beatrice treats DeFlores horribly, insulting him at every turn. Again, DeFlores harps on his love for Beatrice, and then Alonzo and his brother enter. That's it. Nothing else happens. It's really just a waste of paper. Scene 2 though, THAT is a scene. I like the twist they put on it. You walk into the play thinking that beatrice is going to be this delicate flower, but in the end she turns into this manipulative little snake. She belongs more in Bizet's Carmen than she does in this.
The same is true for DeFlores. You walk in thinking that the disfigured one is going to be the true villian, and he's going to try to drive these two apart, probably more resembling Aaron than anything else. But Middleton and Rowley humanize him really well, turning him from the monster into the sympathetic character that the audience has to watch get manipulated. How often is it that we've seen the sympathetic character manipulated anyway? Maybe Edward II? Maybe? I like it, it makes it hard to watch, but at the same time you can't look away.
